What is the role of the laser?
The laser (KTP, for example) emits highly concentrated, monochromatic light (meaning it contains only one wavelength). Like all lasers, it has a specific target – in this case, the color red. When the laser beam hits its target, a “photo-thermal shock” occurs, converting the light into heat; this heat selectively burns the targeted structures, making superficial fine veins (spider veins) disappear after a healing period. It’s essentially a controlled burn.
Is it painful?
Each laser pulse creates a pinprick sensation on the skin – not very painful, but the repetition makes the treatment somewhat unpleasant despite its remarkable effectiveness.
When will results be visible?
As with any superficial burn, healing takes time; results may take several weeks to appear.
What about pigmented spots?
Since KTP laser radiation is also absorbed by brown pigment, certain pigmented spots (on face, hands, etc.) can be treated after precise diagnosis of their nature.
What about leg spider veins?
Dilated small blood vessels on the lower limbs can be eliminated through micro-sclerotherapy (a fine needle injects a substance that chemically scleroses these vessels). Laser treatment can also eliminate certain red-colored vessels in one or several sessions.
